Nicole Knows: Budget Meeting

We all know one of the most stressful parts of planning a wedding is the budget! Whether you have a large or small budget, it is important to stay organized and keep track of your expenses in order to have no curve balls or surprises thrown your way financially. Here are some tips on ways you can save money to stay on budget for your big day:

  • Try a small, 1-2 tier cake with one simple icing color. Use this to cut at your reception, and then use sheet cake from Costco or Sam's Club the kitchen can cut. Nobody will be able to tell the difference, saving you hundreds when it comes to selecting your cakes!

  • Cookies or cupcakes are great alternatives if you want to spice up your dessert instead of the traditional wedding cake. These can also be purchased in bulk through a Costco or Sam's Club, even homemade if you have a baker in the family!

  • Test out your creative eye and try to use an existing template on Zazzle or Shutterfly for your invitations, save the dates, menus, or programs. These types of sites almost always have promotions and discounts running, plus the templates are very user friendly and customizable. These could be a much cheaper route than having them professionally made. Remember, half the time this item gets thrown away quickly, so if you have a tight budget this is a great alternative.

  • Use a DJ over a band. DJs are way cheaper than bands because it’s a one-man-band. If even a DJ is out of budget, consider light and speaker rental on your own, create a playlist, and put it on shuffle! You can even designate a bridesmaid or groomsmen to check in on the playlist to mix things up and play “crowd pleaser” songs! A playlist is a great option for low budget, small and intimate weddings.

  • A cash bar! Yes, I know this isn’t for everyone. But if you have a family that isn’t big on drinking, or a more casual wedding, you can have people pay for their own drinks of choice. You can even provide complimentary water, coffee, and sodas, then simply have alcoholic beverages available for purchase. Also consider talking to your venue about having drink tickets at the table for each guest, giving everyone 1-2 free drink tickets. This way people can still get some free drinks but might save you money in the end as well.

  • Having a buffet style meal is usually cheaper than a sit down, plated meal. This could save you $10+ a person which definitely adds up, especially for those bigger weddings with over 200 people.

  • Speaking of size, the most obvious way to limit your cost is to cut down on your size. After all, this is YOUR big day. SO make sure the most important family and friends are present, and enjoy their company while celebrating your new nuptials!
